 While the EPA does not endorse any specific manufacturer or piece of equipment the specification calls out
a LabTech Essa LM-2 Ring Mill as the mill that was used to
establish the standard. Glen Mills Inc is the primary North

The researchers found that a processing time of only 60 seconds
reduced their sub-2mm fraction to less than 75 microns for
samples containing crystalline secondary explosives. For samples
containing NC based propellant residues, five 60-second grinding
intervals were needed to adequately pulverize the same quantities

 An 800 cc dish was used for the research trials. The dishes are
supplied with a patented "flying saucer" puck that has a concave
curved bottom surface to provide more contact between dish and
puck leading to superior grinding performance. The puck also has
an off-center, truncated hole through it to assist in the mixing of
the sample to assure homogeneity. Bowls are available in
hardened steel in both standard and low-chrome options.
