Is detector sensitivity alone enough to compare particle analyzers?
No. The complete optical system, sample presentation and evaluation method determine the useful measurement. Compare application results under clearly defined conditions.
Evaluate the optical arrangement as a system rather than selecting equipment from the name of one component. Signal range, background and measurement conditions matter alongside detector sensitivity. A technical description of a component is not proof that two complete analyzers will produce equivalent results on a particular dispersion.
How should two optical systems be compared?
Present representative portions using controlled dispersion conditions. Examine background, usable signal and possible saturation alongside the resulting distributions. Record the optical configuration so a difference in sample presentation can be investigated separately.
Method details to record
| Consideration | What to record |
|---|---|
| Optical arrangement | Light source and collection geometry |
| Signal conditions | Background and usable range |
| Application check | Sample and repeatable result |
Why inspect the detector range as well as sensitivity?
A detector may respond to weak light while strong signals exceed its usable range. Inspect the signal conditions across the angular range needed for the application before interpreting changes in a distribution tail.
